How YOU Can Be Part of It

Leave a gift in your Will

Arranging to leave a legacy in your Will is simple.

If you have already made a Will, the simplest way to leave a legacy to the Conservative Foundation is by means of a codicil or by a Letter of Wishes and the standard wording is available on the link here, an example Letter of Wishes is available here.

If you are preparing a new Will there are four common types of legacy you can use to leave a gift to the Conservative Foundation.

  • A residuary gift
  • A cash or pecuniary gift
  • A specific gift
  • A reversionary gift

The standard suggested wording for each of the above is available on the link here.

1. A residuary gift

This is the gift which can range from, for instance, 1% to 100% of your estate after debts, other legacies and liabilities have been met. This has the advantage of automatically keeping up with inflation. It also has the advantage of ensuring that everyone has a share which you want.

The suggested wording of a residuary gift is:

"If, at the date of my death, I am a citizen of the United Kingdom and I was, at any time within the period of five years ending with the date of my death, registered in an electoral register I give free of inheritance tax a ______ percentage share of the residue of my estate to THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY FOUNDATION LIMITED of 30 Millbank, London, SW1P 4DP (Company Number 05289086) and I declare that the receipt of the person who appears to be the Secretary or other proper officer on behalf of the said company shall be a sufficient discharge to my executors."

2. A cash or pecuniary gift

You can also choose to leave a sum of money regardless of size.

The suggested wording for this form of legacy is:

"If, at the date of my death, I am a citizen of the United Kingdom and I was, at any time within the period of five years ending with the date of my death, registered in an electoral register I give free of inheritance tax the sum of £_____ (in figures and words) to THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY FOUNDATION LIMITED of 30 Millbank, London, SW1P 4DP (Company Number 05289086) and I declare that the receipt of the person who appears to be the Secretary or other proper officer on behalf of the said company shall be a sufficient discharge to my executors."

3. A specific gift

This is the gift of something valuable like a property, a piece of jewellery or stocks shares. The form of wording is the same as a pecuniary gift, except that the gift is specified instead of a cash sum.

4. A reversionary gift

This gift has the advantage of providing for your family first and then benefiting the Conservative Foundation. So when the original beneficiary dies, the gift in your will reverts to the Conservative Foundation. Your solicitor or legal advisor will be able to provide you with the wording for this form of legacy.

Your solicitor will be able to advise you as to the most appropriate legacy to meet your personal requirements.

The Conservative Foundation has an inheritance tax-free status which mean that any legacy you leave is free of inheritance tax. This is something you may want to consider talking to your solicitor.
